I could run it w/o the secondary one I'm told, but I'd have a permanent CEL. Oh well, time for a new (universal) O2 sensor in the new J-pipe I guess. Walker Exhaust 31595 Exhaust Pipe Flange Gasket. O2 Oxygen Sensor Front DOWNSTREAM Compatible with Mazda Protege MPV Protege5 2002-2003. 1 Hey Gang, So a Mazda dealership informed me I would have to replace my front catalytic converter to the tune of 1232, not including labor. There's nothing to get a wrench or socket onto now, and not enough area for vise-grips to work. This item: Manifold Catalytic Converter Fits 1999-2003 Mazda Protege. I battled with that b**** for 1.5 hours (on-car, and eventually in-vise) and its not coming out now, especially since my last ditch effort of the breaker bar + extensions (for hundreds of ft-lbs of torque force) resulted in a slip that completely rounded off the hex head. I tried penetrating lube, a torch, my impact gun on maaaaax (using the proper O2 sensor socket), and an 18" breaker bar with an extension. The ONLY real problem I had, and still have, is that the original secondary oxygen sensor, attached to the J-pipe, is 100% completely and utterly seized. Made short work of those spring bolts using the clamp. Installing the new one was simple as well, although I'd recommend using a C-clamp to clamp the rear flange to the next pipe, in order to line up the spring bolts without having to fight spring tension. Overall, removing the old one was a 2/10 difficulty and thats with dealing with a LOT of rust. Uninstalling the old one took nothing more than a few sockets and ratchets, and my impact for a few bolts (just to make short work of them). I paid $55 CAD for same-day delivery to my parts supplier, although online in USD its avail at many places for about $30. I found that Walker makes a MUCH cheaper J-pipe than Bosal or Maremont. Just wanted to update you guys with the results.
